Subsea Ammonia Transfer
We served as strategic lead for safety and risk management on a first-of-its-kind offshore terminal and 6-kilometer subsea pipeline system designed for anhydrous ammonia transport. Our scope spanned major technical frontiers — bundling liquefied ammonia and LPG with petroleum products, managing ammonia’s extreme reactivity with water and its toxic marine implications, understanding dispersion behavior across open water surfaces and the marine environment, and routing the pipeline through a densely populated fertilizer plant, introducing critical legal and residential proximity challenges. With virtually no global regulatory precedent, we defined a bespoke safety philosophy addressing 5-second emergency shutdown protocols and hydraulic surge risks — setting up an industrial guideline for similar applications.
The project attracted the attention of the Ammonia Institute and global ammonia safety experts, leading to a dedicated case study session held in California. The project was put on hold and later withdrawn for financial reasons.
